I love the 'art' of communicating. But we creatives sometimes get a bad rap for talking down to the audience. Special lighting effects that make women look like goddesses, men with wash-board stomachs.... "Drink this soda, an you too can look like me..." Insane!

Then one day, Jamie Lee Curtis did a photoshoot for some magazine. She did the cover (with full make-up, special lighting etc.) But instead of just letting the stylists turn her into another Hollywood Goddess too beautiful for her real age, she convinced the magazine to ALSO print her photograph without any make-up on the back cover. They agreed, reluctantly I'm sure. But that simple moment of un-vanity was the catalyst that has slowly created a sort of revolution. I guess you could call it an "Honesty Revolution".

It wasn't too long afterwards that Dove came out with their brilliant campaign highlighting 'real' women posing in their underwear - unashamed of the chubby thighs and eye-wrinkles. Dove also opened our eyes to the destructive attitude towards how women should look. Dove Onslaught.

Now, here is the next generation of brilliliant creative thinking. Why do we have to believe 'life is perfect' if we use this cream, drink this water, wear these shoes? And this spot sums up how stupid and ridiculous advertising can be. A little honesty never hurt anyone...

Sandisk has a fantastic campaign currently running which I am really drawn to. As Art Directors, we are always looking for the quickest visceral response to an idea or product. What draws me to this is how we all have this obvious understanding of these two common things and their relationship to eachother in the space. They should not have a relationship, but somehow it works. And now I have to go to Microceter and buy another memory stick. That's advertising!
